Wolfgang Ludwig was born in Mielesdorf in Thuringia in 1923.
He first studied (1947–1950) at the University of Graphics and Book Art in Leipzig and then (1950–1956) completed a second degree at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin with Hans Uhlmann and Alexander Camaro.
In 1955 he received a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation. From 1956 to 1967 he worked as a freelancer for the Berlin architect Paul G. R. Baumgarten.
In 1967 he took up a position as a lecturer at the Academy for Graphics, Printing and Advertising.
From 1971 to 1991 he worked as a professor of visual communication at the University of Fine Arts.
